SAN ANGELO, Texas —PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
September is National Prostate Awareness Month. Every 18 minutes, another American man dies from prostate cancer. That’s more than 90 deaths per day. Overall, one in six men will have prostate cancer during his lifetime. Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men, with nearly 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer expected this year.
PROSTATE CANCER SYMPTOMS
During the early stages of prostate cancer, there are no symptoms. That’s why annual consultation and prostate cancer testing is critically important in catching cancer while it’s confined in the prostate. In other words, you may not have any symptoms at all, but cancer may be detected as a result of a general health checkup where a PSA test and physical exam of the prostate is given. Prostate cancer symptoms include:
Strong urge to urinate immediately
Frequent nighttime urination
Pain or burning when urinating, or both
Difficulty starting the urinary stream
A weak urinary stream once it starts
Dribbling after you’re finished
Pain in the genital and pelvic area
Pain when ejaculating
Blood in the urine or semen
Frequent urinary tract infections
Other more serious prostate cancer symptoms may include:
Unexpected weight loss
Pain in the lower back or pelvic area
Anemia
Fatigue
CHECK YOUR HEART RATE
Using your smartphone camera and adding the Instant Heart Rate app equals one of the most accurate heart-rate monitor tools available today. Best of all, it’s free for Android and iPhone.
SECONDHAND SMOKE
Smoking by parents is associated with a wide range of adverse effects in their children, including exacerbation of asthma, increased frequency of colds and ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome. Secondhand smoke causes 202,000 asthma episodes, 790,000 physician visits for buildup of fluid in the middle ear (otitis media, or middle ear infection), and 430 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cases or more, it is estimated, each year. If you need help to quit smoking, you can call the Lung Helpline at 1-800-LUNG-USA (1-800-586-4872).
GET YOUR SCREENINGS
According to the latest results from a Harvard School of Public Health study, 40 percent of colorectal cancers might be prevented if more people get regular colonoscopy screening, which existing guidelines recommend for those over age 50, every 10 years.
